When planning a maternity photo shoot, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is where to shoot: indoors or outdoors. Both have their unique charm, but I’d love to walk you through the pros of each, so you can decide what feels best for you. If you’re considering a studio maternity session, here are some of the major benefits compared to shooting outdoors in Los Angeles. From comfort to convenience, there’s a lot to love about staying inside.
The Perks of a Studio Maternity Session
1. Total Privacy
If you’re considering any bare-skin or semi-nude looks, privacy is key. In the studio, you can relax completely without worrying about onlookers or distractions.
2. Temperature-Controlled Comfort
Whether it’s sweltering outside or freezing cold, studio sessions are always cozy. We’ve got A/C, heat, and a soft robe waiting for you.
3. Perfect Lighting—Every Time
Lighting can make or break a photo. In my studio, we use both beautiful natural light from large windows and professional studio lighting. That means no harsh midday sun, no worrying about clouds or time of day—we can shoot stunning images at any hour.
4. Easy Outfit Changes
All of my sessions include multiple looks—usually four outfits. In the studio, changing is quick and easy (and private). We’ve got a steamer on hand for any wardrobe wrinkles, and you’ll have access to a full mirror, comfy seating, and plenty of space to spread out.
5. A Relaxing, Luxe Experience
From hair and makeup (done right here on-site) to music, snacks, and even espresso, my studio is designed to feel like a calming little retreat. We set the vibe you want—whether that’s upbeat, peaceful, or somewhere in between.
6. No Permits, No Hassle
In some LA locations, outdoor photography requires a permit, even for short sessions. Shooting in the studio means you skip the paperwork—and the risk of someone asking you to stop mid-session.
The Magic of Outdoor Sessions
That said, outdoor shoots definitely have their own magic.
If you’re envisioning buttery light during sunset, or have your heart set on a particular natural setting—like a beach, forest, or grassy meadow—then an outdoor shoot could be perfect for you.
The tradeoff? You’ll need to plan around the light (usually just an hour window at sunset), brave the elements, and possibly change in your car or a public restroom. But if you’re craving those wide-open skies and earthy textures, the results can be stunning.
Which Should You Choose?
It really comes down to the vibe you want.
If you’re drawn to minimalism, clean lines, editorial vibes, and a pampered, seamless experience, a studio session might be your best fit. If you love a lot of movement, sunlight, nature, or want to document your pregnancy outdoors in a more lifestyle-inspired way, on-location could be a lovely choice.
